ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Giovanni Amendola passed away a century ago in France due to the consequences of an attack by fascist assassins.
The Republic honors him as one of the most distinguished figures who bravely opposed – at great personal cost – the authoritarian regression of institutions, with a demanding vision of liberalism centered on the protection of Parliament and the separation of powers, opposing all forms of political violence that threaten the free expression of popular will and sovereignty.” This was stated by President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the centenary of Giovanni Amendola’s death.
“A refined and passionate intellectual, a prominent journalist, and an esteemed deputy and minister, Amendola embodied one of the highest expressions of that liberal anti-fascism that tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to spare the nation from the twist of totalitarianism,” the Head of State continued. “Amendola was a proponent of the Aventino: following the Matteotti murder, he fought diligently to raise public awareness against Mussolini’s government, which was responsible for the assassination. However, the attacks from the ‘squadracce nere’ meted out to him the same fate as Matteotti. Through his writings, he contributed to the renewal of Italian culture in the early 20th century. A cultured yet pragmatic southern Italian, he foresaw the crisis of the liberal state and sought to strengthen the democratic characteristics of the political system, appealing both for a public ethic of responsibility and for the consolidation of representative institutions. He possessed a European vision, albeit in the early stages compared to what more fully developed in the post-war period. Today’s centenary allows us to recognize the ideal roots and threads of continuity between the struggle for freedom and democracy in the early 1920s and the rule of law, as well as the pluralism of institutions and society that took shape with the Republic,” concluded Sergio Mattarella.
