41 – Caligola assassinated (1984 years ago). While returning to the Imperial Palace after attending the Ludi Palatini, the Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, known as Caligula, is attacked by a group of praetorians led by Cassius Chaerea and Cornelius Sabinus, who stab him to death. A few hours later, his wife Milonia Caesonia and his sixteen-month-old daughter Julia Drusilla meet the same fate.

1848 – Gold Rush begins in America (177 years ago). While examining the channel under Sutter’s mill in Coloma, California, attracted by a glimmer in the water, James Marshall, an employee of Johan Sutter, finds a nugget, setting off the gold rush in the American West.

1920 – Modì passes away (105 years ago). The Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, known as “Modì” (maudit, meaning cursed, as he was nicknamed in France), succumbs to pulmonary tuberculosis in Paris; he was born in Livorno thirty-five years earlier.

1954 – First televised football match (71 years ago). The Italian television broadcasts its first official football match: the encounter between the Italian national team and Egypt, a qualifier for the World Cup, resulting in a 5-1 victory for the Azzurri.

1972 – Japanese soldier found still at war (53 years ago). On the island of Guam, Japanese soldier Shoichi Yokoi is discovered after having lived in the jungle for 298 years, unaware that World War II had ended. Over the years, he took refuge in a cave and survived by eating tree bark.

1984 – Apple launches the Macintosh (41 years ago): A dapper Steve Jobs, dressed in a blue double-breasted blazer, white shirt, and light green bow tie (far removed from the casual style of the 2000s), presents the Macintosh 128k to 2,600 attendees, the most famous personal computer developed by Apple that ushers in a new era in computing: the era of Macs.

2002 – Arrests made in the Wanna Marchi case (23 years ago). Following two months of investigations prompted by a complaint from the program Striscia la Notizia, the judiciary orders the arrest of TV salesperson Wanna Marchi on charges of fraud and extortion. The same accusations and measures apply to her daughter Stefania Nobile.

2003 – Gianni Agnelli passes away (22 years ago). Giovanni Agnelli, a symbol of industrial Italy in the 1900s, dies in Turin. His name remains inextricably linked to Fiat and Juventus.
