“The goals established by UNAIDS for controlling HIV infection by 2025 are the so-called Continuum of Care (CoC) targets of ‘95-95-95’ (95% diagnosed, 95% on therapy, 95% with suppressed viral load)” – explain Lucia Pugliese and Vincenza Regine from the AIDS Operational Center (CoA) of the Italian National Institute of Health. “These percentages cannot be derived from national HIV and AIDS surveillance systems, which fail to provide information on the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Italy and their clinical, immunological, virological, and behavioral characteristics. Recently, the CoC has been estimated using mathematical models based on the results of previous national projects CARPHA1 and CARPHA2 conducted in 2012 and 2014, as well as data from Italian cohort studies like ICONA. To address this information gap, a project was conducted across all public centers in Italy, leading to a more accurate depiction of the characteristics of people living with HIV.”
